ANYWAY. this took about four hours on and off and i’ve still only reached the tip of the iceberg for this and although i’m fucking exuasted i am also amazed, nostalgic, and slightly tearful. it’s amazing to think of how much this fandom has done. homestuck is one of the longest works of fiction in the english language, and the fan content is so staggering it has possibly become bigger than the comic itself.
It’s just been amazing to be in this fandom, and to never get really bored, or go without reading new content, old content, fan produced or otherwise. there’s always been fan competitions, rps, forums, meetups, fanadventures to look or participate in or even make from scratch. this fandom has done so much in the 7 years it’s been around. and whether you’ve been around for all of it or only a week, there’s always been something to enjoy. i’ve made so many friends out of this comic. i’ve speculated, written, drawn, cosplayed, rped, cried, Discourse’d, and even at some point probably rapped, for this fandom. and it’s sense of inclusion and community is honestly something i’ll miss the most. even if you weren’t a bnf or actively producing content, there was so much content to discuss you’d make friends and feel part of something either way. chaotic, self deprecating, emotional or not, this fandom has created something. and it’s a really fucking good thing.
have a good one.
thoughts regarding the dreamdaddy discourse below!
i myself cannot speak for the entirety of those that played the game, but for what it was worth, and how it was presented, and the writing, i think that the game itself was good. was it a complete masterpiece? no. was it trash? no. it was a good game, and considering that it was made almost completely by a small group of people (the game grumps having little to do with it, as suzy has stated, some only doing voice work, others only helping pitch ideas), it’s a good game.
it’s especially poignant for being the first of its kind. a dating sim exclusively made with lgbtq+ interests at heart? the main characters all having very distinct personalities, designs, and relationships between one another? having a close family bond that grows throughout the narrative that resonates with both kids and adults? a canon option to make your player character transgender, and a canon transgender character in and of their own right? these are not things you see in a typical game. the writing is done well and done right in regards to making the characters feel human, and have lows and highs. they’re all flawed, and all want to get better as people, and your player character can help them all grow in different ways, and they can help your player character grow as well.
that being said, there are bugs (of course, there are rarely games that don’t have bugs within them), and certain values that may come across as not being completely earnest. but i personally think that for what the game is doing, it should be commended. it’s not a magnum opus that deserves to be completely praised by any means. but for what issues and challenges the game tackles, it should be recognized for putting the time, thought, and effort into creating a game that can resonate with so many people.
the cult ending: hoo boy. as someone familiar with jared rosen (the primary writer for joseph’s routes) and his… interests… in the occult, lovecraftian, and of horror and macabre in general, the learning of its existence didn’t particularly shock me all that much. i believe vernon and leighton when they said that the ending was a halloween dlc that had been left within the code. sometimes these things happen. mistakes are made. and joseph is not 100% canonically gay. his head writer has stated that he wanted to encapture the bi experience. BI. meaning that joseph is more than likely at least somewhat attracted to two genders. and he was never confirmed to be an actual DEMON in that ending either. and the rest of the characters are gay/bi/pan and portrayed with completely normal personalities, interests, and values. joseph just happened to be a character that creative liberties took on. (more on the cult ending and my personal theories to it later on, however.)
long story short, dream daddy is a good game for what it is worth. the narratives are all fun and never feel too cheesy, nor do they feel demeaning or demoralizing. they’re not meant to poke fun at anyone. they’re supposed to be complex characters that just so happen to have this sexuality. am i saying that everybody should support the game? no. am i saying that the game doesn’t deserve to be praised for the high points it gives? no. it’s just like any other game out there. highs and lows. pros and cons. ups and downs. and i can see arguments on either side. but please, at least commend it for what it has done and what it has tried to do. not a lot of games (or any other examples of media, for that matter) can do that sort of thing and make it work.
No, but seriously, do you know how amazing Vincent Price is?
Not just as an actor, although he was a blast to watch in everything he did. He’s one of those actors who’s just clearly having a whale of a time, no matter how bad the film is. He’s just genuinely happy to be there (it makes his villains a particular delight, and he played a LOT of them).
But did you know that he was also on the PFLAG board after his daughter came out to him? And that he was one of the earliest celebrities to speak out against the silence surrounding the AIDS epidemic?
Did you know that when his daughter came out to him, he admitted to her that it had been difficult for him during his first two marriages, because his wives had not been pleased to find out that their husband was just as interested in men as they were?
That’s right, kids, Vincent Price was BISEXUAL AS FUCK, and it was one of those open Hollywood secrets. And his wife Coral Browne? The one he grew old with and wrote cookbooks with and was basically ridiculously sweet with?
Also bisexual as fuck. They were the queer power couple of Hollywood in the 70s. His daughter, Victoria, grew up around Rock Hudson and members of the LGBT community. When she came out, Vincent Price became a board member of PFLAG and was just about the most accepting and awesome dad.
Did you know that Vincent Price played Oscar Wilde in a one-man play, and when it was denounced by anti-gay activist Anita Bryant, he dismissed her right back, saying that Oscar Wilde had already come up with a term for her: a Woman of No Importance? Because Vincent Price was deliciously witty and an awesome person.
Let me conclude with a quote from his daughter (from this article, where I got a lot of this information):
‘“In a funny way, and I think I’m going to cry, he understood me at 22 better than I understood myself then,” Price concluded. “Of course, he was in his 70s and lived a hell of a lot longer than I had, and he understood that at the end of the day it’s about who and what and how we love. And I have not been a person who has been very successful at conventional relationships, but loving well and loving deeply has been the most important thing to me.”’
Happy birthday, Vincent Price. You were a gem of an actor, and an even greater human being.
OBJECTION: all of this is absolutely fantastic and I just have to add…
Maybe none of these peeked your interest. Maybe you’ve been wanting to create an o.c, but never really knew how to start, or you just enjoy making O.C’s.
Hell, maybe you have a Gemsona/Transformers/Southpark character that you want to create, but don’t have the energy to draw!
This part of this list is specifically for OCs and Oc building. It can also apply to developing RP characters~
I added a couple of links-((In the appearance, details, and the whole of item names section!)), and the Gemsona area-((above)), as well as the couple of Transformers and Southpark character builder links below..Basically everything I made bold, because I am complete fandom trash…
