where was the hype when several other celebs came out these past few months, huh? why did no one talk about cara delvingne being gender fluid? or rose mcgowan coming out as nonbinary? alyson stoner came out as bi this year, so did abbi jacobson from broad city, and i saw one post about alyson on tumblr and nothing about abbi period. lee pace came out as gay this year as well, yet i only saw two posts about it, one was a “pushing daisies belongs to the gays now” joke while the other was a thirst post (that i relate to because he is hot but still). cory michael smith (gotham’s riddler) came out as gay this year and i heard no one going on about that. the only reason i think the internet went nuts over dirty computer and janelle and tessa coming out was because of valkyrie stans and the fact that thor: ragnarok came out shortly before hand so tessa was in the public eye. and these are all just people who came out in the past six months.
what about actors and musicians who came out last year or even before that and got slept on? where was this hype when tyler, the creator came out last year and released a whole album about his sexuality (in a genre known for being blatantly homophobic, mind you)? brian michael smith came out as trans last year but where was the excitement over a trans man of color being out and proud? alia shawkat came out as bi last year and no one said shit even though everyone i know loves arrested development. and this list keeps going.
is being gay or bi not ~inclusive~ enough? is being trans not enough to be celebrated? is being out as a person of color not worth praise and admiration? what is it about a cis white guy who everyone basically decided was a huge dickhead like three years ago coming out as pan that makes everyone lose their minds with excitement in ways they never did for any of these other people?
and btw i know some of the people on this list are also problematic and i did that on purpose, because someone might see this and go “well so and so did this or that” without having the same mindset about a guy who compared anti-police brutality protestors to rosanne barr making racist comments in the same interview he came out. if you’re gonna celebrate him and put his face all over my dash with pride icons and stan posts, why wouldn’t you do this for any of these other people? also, don’t tell me it’s because he’s more well known because a lot of these people are in shows and movies with massive fandoms and the musicians i mentioned have large followings.
i want an actual reason for why his coming out is somehow more influential than any of these other people. i’m not trying to bash anyone here, i just see this trend of cis white pan people getting more attention than anyone else who comes out and that bothers me.
It’s because no one’s fucking heard of these people, chill out. Thank you for making this post so now we know about them but christ dude dont throw a fit
cara delevingne is a famous model and actress and was enchantress in suicide squad, a movie from a franchise with a large fandom. rose mcgowan was in the insanely popular show charmed (it even spawned comic books if i remember right) as well as several movies with large followings. alyson stoner was a well known disney channel kid (ever watch suite life?) and has been a known dancer since she was a child. broad city also has a large fandom, meaning people know who abbi jacobson is, the same applies to arrested development and alia shawkat. lee pace was in gotg, the lord of the rings and the hobbit series, as well as pushing daisies, a show with a massive fandom. cory michael smith plays one of the most popular characters in gotham, a show with a fairly large fandom. janelle monae is a well known singer and musician. tessa thompson is a known actress and was in a marvel movie, becoming one of the most popular in the film she was in. tyler, the creator is a famous rapper and clothing designer who has multiple popular shows. and brian michael smith was in gossip girl, blue bloods, and several other shows with followings.
a lot of people know who these celebrities are just like a lot of people don’t know who brendon urie is. i’m not having a fit, i’m pointing out the fact that dozens of people have come out in these past two years alone and, with the exception of janelle and tessa, this is the most hype i’ve seen for anyone coming out even though he’s a known asshole and jerk and has been for years. this list is just a small fraction of people who came out and i made sure to only name people who i knew for a fact had large fanbases. just because you don’t know who these people are doesn’t mean they haven’t been famous and well known for several years, a couple even being famous and known since the 90’s and early 00’s.
